San Juan Island, Washington

Ed and I decided to go see the whales from San Juan Islands, Washington. I was sitting on the beach looking toward Vancouver, BC. I have a thing for orcas and whales and I have never seen an orca not in captivity. When I was young, I went to Sea World in Florida. We saw an orca performing of course but I have never seen one in the wild. I finally got to see a gray whale off the coast of Oregon last spring in Depoe Bay. Depoe Bay is known for whale watching and people come for all over to watch and help count the whales and their movements. You can see the picture of the gray whale and my blog about them here.

San Juan Islands and the Puget Sound are known for the Orcas and whales that use the islands to capture the fish they are trailing. On this day we did not see any whales or orcas. I did enjoy the island and the ferry ride there. Ed captured great pictures of the sound and the birds, including bald eagles and California condors. I decided to relax on this drifted log and enjoy the scenery when Ed snapped my picture! As you can tell, the weather was clear but cool. My favorite type of weather.
